BEN NEVIS - MORE ADVENTEROUS ROUTES
Ledge Route,Ben Nevis, June 2011For those with a sense of adventure there are many more 'interesting' routes up Ben Nevis than via the Pony Track which can be very crowded in summer. If you have some previous hillwalking experience then you may want to consider a more challenging way to the summit of Ben Nevis. There are routes full of charachter, scrambling, fabulous views and mostly quiet, indeed we may see no other people at all until the summit area.
'It's the journey, not just the summit'
Number 4 Gully, Ben Nevis. Dec 2010NUMBER 4 GULLY is one of the easiest routes on Ben Nevis's vast north face. The route up travels through spectacular scenery, up the Ciste Corrie with views of impressive ice and rock architecture. From the top of the gully it is 30mins to the summit of Ben Nevis.
Upper Glen Nevis. April 2010From UPPER GLEN NEVIS, this route is full of varied scenery. We pass the beautiful Steall Meadows and Steall waterfalls then into a remote corrie, gaining Carn Mor Dearg and the arete or more directly to the summit of Ben Nevis.
Carn Dearg Beag. Feb 2010A lovely route via CARN BEAG DEARG. This is a great way up in summer or winter. A cracking route, starting with a Gondola ride to 650m! We travel round to a quiet area between Carn Mor Dearg and Aonach Mor, ascend a easy walking ridge to gain Carn Mor Dearg then onwards to the CMD arete and the summit of Ben Nevis. This is a 'A to B' route. Starting at the Nevis Range ski area and finishing in Glen Nevis.
Ben Nevis from Sgurr a' Mhaim. May 2009THE WATERSLIDE ROUTE. The southern slopes of The Ben, above Polldubh in Glen Nevis, have the longest continuous steep ground in Britain! A demanding and strenuous route but full of character and the shortest route to the summit of Ben Nevis! In summer the middle section of the route up enters a beautifully wild corrie, home to the rare Mountain Ringlet Butterfly.
On Ledge Route, Oct 2010The best easy scramble on Ben Nevis, LEDGE ROUTE. We head up the Allt a' Mhuillin to the CIC hut then head partway up the Corrie Ciste and Carn Dearg Buttress where the scramble begins. Spectacular scenery throughout the scramble with ledges and narrow ridges to finish on the Carn Dearg NE summit then a 20 min walk across the plateau to the summit of Ben Nevis. This can be combined with a descent onto the CMD arete route for a fantastic mountaineering route.
Surgeons Rib, Ben Nevis, June 2010SURGEONS RIB is a route where you will be virtually guranteed not to see no one all day to the summit area. It's an easy scramble/walk that begins in Glen Nevis and runs alongside Surgeons Gully, named after a doctor at the Belford Hospital who first climbed the gully in winter. The way up is mostly pathless but gives great views down to the glen.
East ridge Carn Dearg Meadhonach. March 2012EAST RIDGE CARN DEARG MEADHONACH/CMD ARETE. This is a delightful wee scramble which is little more than a narrow ridge and some easy scrambling. We take the Nevis Range gondola up to 650m so a good head start on the day! Then drop down into the beautiful and quiet Allt Daim. It's about an hour and a half's walk up to the foot of the spur and then another hour to the summit of Carn Dearg Meadhonach. From here it's then just 10 minutes to the main summit of Carn Mor Dearg and over the CMD arete to The Ben. A fantastic, if long day out but it does have that 650m height gain at the start.
